Practice scripts and demo scripts
Practice is for you. Use anything that helps you: a book, a speech, a news article. You are not publishing it.
A demo is for producers. Use original scripts. Do not lift lines from existing shows, games or adverts.
Where to find practice scripts
- Books and speeches.
- Articles and instructions read aloud, to practise explaining.
- Your own writing, to practise reading something that sounds like you.
- Scripts from your coach or course.
Scripts for demos
Choose scripts that sound like real, current work in the genre. Keep them short, specific and natural. Write them yourself, or hire a writer who understands the genre.
Read them like a producer would
Mark the stress, the pauses and the words that carry the meaning. Read the first line three ways and choose the one that sounds like someone talking.
What to leave out
- Famous lines from films and games.
- Copy from real brands you have not worked for.
- Anything you did not write or commission.
Keep a script library
Keep a folder of scripts by genre: commercial, narration, e-learning, character. When you need a demo or an audition warm-up, you have something ready. The demo reel guide shows how scripts become clips.
Show the scripts on your site
A short line under each reel saying what it is, and a transcript, helps visitors who cannot listen and gives search engines something to read. See the website guide.
