What a coach does
A coach teaches you to read copy as speech, to take direction, to keep a read consistent, and to know your range. They also help you choose what to aim at.
What to look for
- They work in the field. Ideally they voice, direct or cast the kind of work you want.
- They give specific feedback. “Warmer” is less helpful than “you drop the end of each sentence”.
- They are honest. A coach who tells you what is not working is worth more than one who praises.
- They explain their process. You should know what you will do in the first month.
Questions to ask before you start
- What kind of work do you coach for?
- What will we do in the first lessons?
- How do you give feedback, and can I record it?
- How long do students usually train before a demo?
- What happens if it is not the right fit?
How coaching fits with the rest
Coaching feeds your first demo, your auditions and the page that presents you. A website is the last step: it shows the work you have trained for.
Use the lessons
Record your lessons, listen back, and practise the exercises. The lesson is an hour; the learning is what you do between lessons.
